hISTORY OF USE
The history of anabolic steroids are back to the 1930's, before the term steroids was even used. In the 1930's, a team of scientists created a synthetic form of testosterone to help treat men who are unable to produce enough of the hormone for natural growth, development and sexual functions.
During World War II, it was found that this could be used to help malnourished solders gain weight and improve performance. After the war, athletes began to use them to enhance their performance in competitions.
In the 1956 Olympics, Soviet athletes performed a very high levels. After learning they were using testosterone an American physician, Dr. Zeigler, created anabolic steroids.
In the 1970's, they became very popular among all athletes (Olympians and professional athletes). In 1975, they were banned in the Olympics.
In 1988, they were introduces as part of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act.
A few years later, congress passed the Anabolic Steroid Enforcement Act of 1990.
Today, illicit sales of steroids are prevalent and surveys show that adolescent use of steroids are increasing and a great number of adults are actively using.
